1966: A Congenial Gathering

The image of an old photo taken in 1966 at the Manhattan apartment of United Nations correspondent David Horowitz who had just been elected president of the Foreign Press Association. Seated on the right are David and Nan Horowitz. Standing at the right front is Italian journalist and close Horowitz friend John Cappelli, secretary of the FPA.

To the left, looking away from the camera is the British correspondent Edwin Tetlow, another longtime UN stalwart. Tetlow’s greatest stroke of luck was to arrive in Cuba in 1958 at the very moment that Fidel Castro was taking power and Fulgencio Batista was fleeing for his life. He was the first foreign correspondent to gain an exclusive interview with Fidel Castro. According to his journalist son Vanni, John Cappelli kept the photo next to his computer to the end of his life.
