Millions are familiar with the phrase the “ark of the covenant,” if not from the Bible, then through the the blockbuster film “Raiders of the Lost Ark” that popularized the quest for the ark and its legendary powers.
However, few realize the phrase “ark of the covenant,” as translated in English, more often appears in the Bible as “ark of the Testimony.” And further, the term “ark” in Hebrew merely means a chest or box. Accordingly, when one speaks of the “ark of the Covenant” one is really speaking of a wooden box or chest, gold plated, that was constructed to hold something–and that something was the “covenant” or “testimony.”
So the question is, what was the “testimony,” that is, the mysterious contents of this golden box?
